North river has built a system to encourage this called flexhouse in which customization can happen with limited skills and cost impacts upon projects.

We encourage clients to consider how they would like their project to support them in the next phase of their lives, from changing careers to aging in place to living one’s values, the invitation to letting the project be your own design. This process is iterative, and collaborative, and will come down to choosing both the clear priorities small details and that must be designed into the projects from the very beginning. Our flexhouse designs also include the ability for clients to transform the house layouts over time, in order to learn to adapt to their changes in life, and to different users over time. But setting these first steps in Phase I of the work is always the best place to start.
